So Kate Garraway has proven a "beautiful message of condolence" from the Prince and Princess of Wales following the tragic death of her husband Derek.

The 56-year-old presenter returned to Good Morning Britain today, just three days after burying her husband Derek.

Derek Draper became seriously ill during the early part of the pandemic in March 2020 and spent 13 months in hospital before being discharged. He died on January 3 after suffering lingering symptoms from the coronavirus.

Speaking on the show, the mother-of-two explained how the Prince and Princess of Wales and King Charles have been in touch to pay their respects.

She explained: “Catherine and William sent a beautiful message.

“I know Katherine was in the hospital herself, so I really appreciate that.”

The message of condolence from the couple comes after the Princess of Wales left hospital last week after undergoing abdominal surgery.

The Prince and Princess of Wales aren't the only royals to reach out to Kate Garraway in the wake of Derek's death.

She continued: “I had a message from the king, who knows a lot about grief.

“Because there is someone who knows about grief and also knows about this kind of anticipatory grief where you know that something has a risk of happening, and maybe it will inevitably happen at some point, but how different it is when it happens.”

However, the broadcaster then said she was "kind of sworn to secrecy" regarding the contents of messages from the royals.

She added: “I think it was nice of them to reach out to me, but it’s nice to know that these people understand those feelings.” I think for all of us, it binds us all together.

In June 2023, Kate Garraway was awarded an MBE by the Prince of Wales. At Windsor Castle. The honor recognized her services to broadcasting, journalism and philanthropy.

During the impact investing gala, Kate's late husband, Derek, watched from the sidelines in a wheelchair.

At the end of last year, Kate revealed she was planning to attend the Princess of Wales's caroling service at Westminster Abbey, but Derek's health unfortunately took a turn for the worse.

During the GMB broadcast, the mother-of-two said: “I was going to take my dad who he had been looking forward to for a long time.

“But unfortunately, we ended up going back to the hospital with another crisis. It would be great to sit down and watch it with everyone.

Discussing Derek's funeral service and final days, Garroway told how their 17-year-old daughter, Darcy, told him: 'Daddy, if you can't do this, we'll be OK.' You can release yourself if you need to go.

In the heartbreaking interview, she said Darcy whispered to her father: “Don't worry about us, don't worry about Mum.” We will be okay because you live through us.

Garraway said she had similar conversations with him and had "the opportunity to hold his hand and smell his skin" and tell him "we're here" — adding that "some people don't understand that."

The presenter also revealed that her daughter was “very brave” and offered herself to be a pallbearer, after four horrific years for the family.

The 56-year-old, who will return to host the program from Thursday alongside Ben Sheppard, spoke from her home via video link just three days after his funeral.

Garraway thanked her colleague Susanna Reid for compiling a book of condolence from viewers, praising the "incredible love" she has received.

Garraway also said she was “110% emotional” after the funeral, and spoke of the “outpouring of love for everyone who supported me.”

She said she was told Draper had 24 hours to live for a month before he eventually died.

Garraway also discussed her daughter Darcy's role as pallbearer at the service, saying: "Darcy came into the room when we were talking about it (funeral plans) and said, 'Please, will you let me carry the coffin.'

“And I thought, Crikey, this is a practical challenge, and for anyone who's done this before, it's a heavy one.” She said I wanted to do it and she insisted on doing it and I thought it was a beautiful thing that she carried her father.

“As for their grief, we are in the foothills, and we know there is a long way to go,” she added of Darcey and his 14-year-old son, Billy.

She continued: “They did not want to pressure him to continue.” I don't think he felt it, I think he kept going because he wanted to be here.

Meanwhile, Garraway confirmed she will be returning to the GMB office on Thursday and joked: "I'll be looking forward to having a dry hair."

She said she would also remove false eyelashes and fake tan, adding: "Don't worry, I will look more respectable."

“I'm looking forward to coming into the world and connecting with everyone again,” Garraway continued.

“Thank you for coming back but have a little patience, I might be a little rusty. I think there is a new king. Did you realize that?

Garraway also said she had received “extraordinary” letters of condolence from unexpected places.

She told GMB: “I received the most beautiful letter from David and Victoria Beckham – handwritten, very fine handwriting... that was Darcey’s note.”

“And from the royal family – Catherine and William sent a lovely message, and I know Catherine was in hospital herself.

“Even the King, because there is someone who knows something about grief, that anticipatory grief where you know that something is in danger of happening and how different it will be when it does happen.”

Garraway began the interview by saying: “Good morning, welcome to my house, we have Rab here and Mark and Simon, who of course you know well and I know him.”

Speaking about his book of condolence, Garraway told Reid and fellow presenter Richard Madeley: “They (the crew) arrived with this morning.” I think Susanna I was part of this. This is from you, beautiful, thank you. Letters to Derek. This is a strange thing.

“I've also got three baskets full of letters, cards from viewers, from the crew over there, and I'm sure you picked up many of them from here. It is absolutely amazing. It's like my emotions are at 110 percent.

“The incredible love we all have as a family at GMB. It's great, and ITV in general. I think we're very, very lucky – it's actually going to make me cry, so let's try to get a few minutes – the love that we have just as a family that people are watching at home.

“It's you at home, where we're so connected, and we've always been in touch in all our joys and all the fun and challenges of life that poor Derek has come face to face with and our family has faced as well.”

“But receiving these messages makes me cry because I feel so grateful, and I also realize that there are people this morning who don't have that feeling of love and they just want to share with you.”

She also praised Draper's "spirit and fight to keep going" and said her two children, Darcy and Billy, were "exceptional throughout".

“It feels like five years and two minutes since Derek was in a positive place before the cardiac arrest that took him away from us,” Garraway continued.

She added that people were wondering why she was returning to work so quickly, but she said: “Life has to begin.” We have to pick ourselves up and keep going.

“This is what Derek wants me to do.” Thanks to everyone who made this possible.

Garraway is said to be “keen to stay busy and get back to work”, and is also hoping to return to her show on Smooth Radio. She is tentatively scheduled to return full-time, but ITV has offered her the option to take time off when she needs it.

Draper's funeral - attended by figures including former Prime Minister Sir Tony Blair, musician Sir Elton John and Labor leader Sir Keir Starmer - was held last Friday at the Church of St Mary the Virgin in Primrose Hill, northwest London.

Ahead of Garraway's return to GMB, a post on the show's X account yesterday said: "Tomorrow Kate Garraway joins us to speak for the first time since the death of her beloved husband Derek." Watch from 6am on ITV.
