The IFAF (International Federation of American Football) Americas Championship is a tournament held every four years that brings together national American football teams from North, South, and Central America. The tournament is organized by the IFAF and aims to promote American football in the region and provide a platform for teams to compete at an international level.
The most recent IFAF Americas Championship was held in 2017 in Panama City, Panama, and was won by the United States national team. The tournament featured six teams, including Mexico, Panama, Canada, Brazil, and the United States.
2023 IFAF Americas Continental Flag Football Championship Heads to Charlotte:
The top men's and women's flag football teams from North and South America will compete there from July 5 to 7.
The 2023 International Federation of American Football Americas Continental Flag Football Championship will take place from July 5–7 in Charlotte, North Carolina, according to a press release from USA Football.
At the United States Performance Centre in Charlotte at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, the competition will include the top men's and women's flag football teams from North and South America.
"We are delighted to announce USA Football as the host of the 2023 Americas Continental Championship, one of the pinnacle events in an expanding international calendar that speaks to the growing competitiveness of flag football around the world," stated IFAF President Pierre Trochet. Building on football's ever-expanding popularity, this event 'promises to be a magnificent demonstration of the depth of talent right across the region, from north to south, boosting the game to even higher heights'.
As the IFAF starts the countdown to the 2024 IFAF Flag Football World Championships in Lahti, Finland, this is the first of three Continental Championships that will take place in 2023. For the first time, the Continental Championships will act as a qualifying route.
Flag football made its debut in June during The World Games 2022 in Birmingham, Alabama, marking the first time the sport was showcased on a multi-sport, international platform. The NFL's Pro Bowl Games were held in a flag football format for the first time last month, introducing the sport to a massive worldwide audience.
"Flag football captured the spotlight this past summer at The World Games," stated Scott Hallenbeck, CEO and Executive Director of USA Football. For the second summer in a row, we are thrilled to welcome dozens of elite athletes to the country. The appeal of flag football as a well-liked international sport has aided the development of elite teams in North and South America. In addition to hosting the 2023 Americas Continental Flag Football Championship in partnership with the USPC, USA Football is pleased to "continue raising the bar for flag football by building the U.S. National Teams and elevating the game's standard."
The American flag teams for men and women are currently world champions. The gold medal winners at The World Games were the American men and the Mexican women.
